Medical Detox

Rutland Centre Alcohol and Cocaine Detoxification Service

Introduction

The Rutland Centre has established a 5 bed detoxification service at its Knocklyon site.  The purpose of this new detox service is to provide a facility for those in addiction who need medical care and support to deal with the physical and psychological aspects of withdrawal before progressing into the mainstream recovery programme.

What is Detox and why is it important

Residential detoxification is more acute than community detoxification (detox) where a person can safely manage withdrawing from a substance at home or under the care of a community program.

When an individual is caught in the cycle of active addiction it is exceptionally difficult to access treatment programs. Our new detox unit at the Rutland Centre allows us to help break down these barriers. We will safely support individuals in ceasing to use alcohol and/or cocaine.

Crucially, it allows individuals to then transition directly into the therapeutic treatment program that will equip them with the tools they need to stay sober, giving every opportunity to achieve a sustained recovery.

A fundamental requirement for admission to our residential program is that people must be alcohol or substance free. However, many people are unable to achieve this status without undergoing a period in residential detox.

Our new service will provide individuals with access to safe and effective detoxification services. Our objective is to shorten the wait time for people looking to access in-patient detox services.  This allows them to progress directly into residential therapeutic treatment - which we know leads to better recovery outcomes for individuals and families. Further, detoxing in a co-located facility has distinct advantages for the client such as a stronger therapeutic relationship, trust already built with the service, as well as guaranteed access to therapeutic treatment.

We anticipate that our program will also benefit family members and close friends of these individuals as intervening further back on the continuum will hopefully lessen the harms caused to all concerned, as well as healthcare providers and community organizations who work with this population. We strongly believe that breaking the intergenerational cycle of addiction in families is imperative if we as a society are to address the ever-growing impacts of addiction in Ireland.
